Lewis Hamilton’s first win in Silverstone was in 2008. He was 23 year old, driving a red and silver McLaren. He ended up winning his first Championship that year.
It was his second year racing in Formula 1 but everyone already knew who Lewis Hamilton was.
Since then a lot has changed.
We don’t have time to make a list of all his achievements and, to be honest, it’s not just the list of trophies and the number of fastest laps he did that make him the driver that he is and his win in Silverstone proved it.
The race was definitely an exciting one to watch. Russell starting in front, Norris and Piastri always there, Verstappen being… well, Verstappen. But the one who just felt it in his bones was Lewis.
He started saying in on Thursday, he just needed a bit of rain. He was ready to replicate that Silverstone 2008.
It didn’t rain that much but it was enough for things to change a little bit, with the help of McLaren getting things wrong and messing up its chances to win the GP.
Lewis Hamilton led the 2024 British Grand Prix from Lap 40, with twelve laps remaining, leaving us all on the edge of our seats. Watching him cross the line with the chequred waving was a relief.
What It Means
Before Sunday, Lewis Hamilton had never cried because of a race win. But after 945 days without, he let it all go.
All the frustrations, all the self doubt, all the anger.
All the sacrifices he endured together with his family, there to hug him.
Watching a champion like him break down into tears reminds us fans what Formula 1 is about.
The passion, the dedication. Telling yourself to go on after being defeated and two years of disappointing cars.
All the love, for the sport and for the fans. Working on yourself to find inner peace.
Never giving up.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.
