Waar ligt de toekomst van Stoffel Vandoorne? By Joni Van Bulck, Belgium

De toekomst van de 29-jarige Belg is momenteel erg onzeker nadat Mercedes heeft aangekondigd dat ze op het einde van volgend seizoen de Formule E gaan verlaten. Hiermee is Mercedes na Audi en BMW al de derde grote constructeur die de elektrische tegenhanger van de Formule 1 de rug toekeert.
Wat met de Formule E?
Komend seizoen gaan ook in de Formule E belangrijke reglementswijzigingen in net zoals bij de Formule 1. Het zogenaamde Gen3-concept in de Formule E treedt dan in werking en nadat Mercedes aanvankelijk om meer verduidelijking vroeg lijkt de Duitse constructeur zich na een beslissing van hogerhand bij Daimler terug te zullen trekken uit de sport. Wat natuurlijk erg jammer is voor de sport, maar ook voor hun twee rijders Vandoorne en de Vries. Voor de Vries wordt verwacht dat er een plaatsje zal vrijkomen in F1.
Ondertussen zitten voor de Formula E de pre-season testing erop. Stoffel en Nyck reden samen 509 ronden, dit was goed voor ongeveer 1.597 km in totaal voor de beide Mercedes rijders. Stoffel zette een 18E tijd neer van alle rijders. Hiermee is hij slecht 0.459 seconden trager dan Günter. Vandoorne was na afloop toch best tevreden met hoe de afgelopen dagen gelopen waren. In deze tests was het voor het team vooral belangrijk om de informatie die ze vorig seizoen hadden opgedaan te herbekijken en vooral de kleine details te begrijpen. Vandoorne was dus best tevreden met het eindresultaat van de testing, maar waar hij het hardst naar uitkijkt is nu gewoon terug opnieuw te kunnen gaan racen. Formula E begint opnieuw op 28 januari in Saudi en dit meteen met een dubbel header.
Terug naar de Formule 1?
Dus nu is de vraag waar ligt de toekomst van de Belg? Gaat hij terug naar de Formule 1? Waar hij een paar seizoenen geleden voor McLaren heeft gereden of gaat hij zich alleen nog focussen op het werk als reserverijder bij Mercedes wat hij momenteel ook nog doet voor het Formule 1 team doet.
Endurance Races
Naast Formule E rijder en reserverijder is Stoffel ook nog eens actief in de Endurance races met Jota en dit in de LMP2 klasse waar hij samen rijdt met Sean Gelael en Tom Blomqvist. Zou Stoffel zijn focus na zijn Formule E carrière op de Endurance leggen? Het team doet het dit jaar namelijk helemaal niet slecht, dus ligt zijn toekomst in deze serie?
Of is IndyCar the way to go?
Of wordt het misschien toch IndyCar en trekt Stoffel de Oceaan over? Want volgens McLaren–baas Zak Brown wordt Stoffel Vandoorne in overweging genomen voor een eventueel derde zitje bij Arrow McLaren SP in de NTT IndyCar Series. Sinds is aangekondigd dat McLaren een meerderheid van aandelen bezit, gaan er steeds meer en meer geruchten op dat ze een 3e zitje willen in hun Indy raceteam. En Brown zou dus aan Stoffel denken omdat hij Stoffel zijn capaciteiten ook kent van zijn tijd als McLaren rijder in de Formule 1.
Op 6 december heeft Stoffel Vandoorne deelgenomen aan de IndyCar-test op de Sebring. Vandoorne volgt Nico Hülkenberg als testcoureur voor Arrow McLaren SP en zal ook een rol kunnen spelen in de plannen van het team. Hij zal dan parttime naast Patricio O’Ward en Felix Rosenqvist rijden, voordat het team een derde auto toevoegt in 2023. Dat is ook mogelijk aangezien Hülkenberg afzag van een plaats in IndyCar.
Tijdens de tests legde Vandoorne maar liefst 138 rondjes af. Stoffel was blij met zijn eerste kennismaking met een IndyCar-bolide en sloot de testdag af met een positief gevoel. Als voorbereiding op de testdag had Vandoorne lang gepraat met Rosenqvist over hoe hij zich het beste kon voorbereiden. Ook de teambaas van Arrow Mclaren SP was uiterst tevreden met wat Stoffel bereikt had tijdens deze testdag. Stoffel heeft nu toch al een klein idee van wat IndyCar inhoudt en dit kan hem toch misschien helpen om mee te bepalen wat hij gaat doen na zijn avontuur in met Mercedes in de Formula E.
Wat zal het worden?
Uiteindelijk zijn er veel geruchten en ik denk dat alleen tijd zal duidelijk maken waar de toekomst van Stoffel gaat liggen. Ik denk keuzes genoeg voor hem, maar er kan natuurlijk veel veranderen op nog een jaar tijd. Want Stoffel heeft wel al aangegeven dat zijn focus eerst en vooral gaat naar het tot een goed einde brengen met Mercedes in de Formule E. Waar de Vries en Vandoorne afgelopen seizoen de constructeurs overwinning hebben gepakt en met de Vries zelfs kampioen geworden zijn.
En als hij nog een sterk laatste seizoen kan rijden in Formule E komen er misschien nog meer kansen voor hem op zijn pad. Tijd zal veel duidelijk maken op het einde.
Where is Stoffel Vandoorne future going to?
The future of the 29-year-old Belgian is currently very uncertain after Mercedes EQ announced that they will leave Formula E at the end of next season. This makes Mercedes, after Audi and BMW, the third major manufacturer to turn its back on the electric counterpart to Formula 1. He is still certain to drive in Formula E in 2022 after the team confirmed that they will run their last season with the same pair. But what next?
What about Formula E? Time for pre-season test!
Next season the so-called Gen3 concept in Formula E will come into effect and after Mercedes initially asked for more clarification, it seems that the German manufacturer will withdraw from the sport after a decision from higher up at Daimler. This is of course a huge pity for the sport, but also for their two drivers Vandoorne and de Vries. For de Vries, it is expected that a place in F1 will become available.. but Vandoorne?
Meanwhile, the pre-season testing for Formula E is over. Stoffel and Nyck drove 509 laps together, which was good for a total of 1.597 km for both Mercedes drivers. Stoffel set an 18 time of all drivers. With this he is only 0.459 seconds slower than Günter. Vandoorne was quite satisfied with how the last few days had gone. In these tests, it was especially important for the team to review the information they had gained last season and specially to understand the small details. Vandoorne was happy with the result but what he is most looking forward to is getting back to racing. Formula E starts again on 28 January in Saudi with a double header.
Back to Formula 1?
So now the question is where does the Belgian’s future lie? Will he return to Formula 1 where he drove for McLaren a few seasons ago or will he just focus on working as a reserve driver and SIM driver for Mercedes which he is currently doing for the Formula 1 team?
Endurance Races
Besides Formula E driver and reserve driver, Stoffel is also active in Endurance races with Jota, in the LM P2 class where he drives together with Sean Gelael and Tom Blomqvist. Would Stoffel put his focus on Endurance after his Formula E career? The team is not doing badly at all this year, so might it be the right series for him?
Or is IndyCar the way to go?
Or maybe Stoffel will cross the ocean racing in Indycar? According to McLaren boss Zak Brown, he has been considered for a possible third seat at Arrow McLaren SP in the NTT IndyCar Series. Since it was announced that McLaren owns most of the shares, there are more and more rumors that they want a third seat in their Indy race team. And Brown would think of Stoffel because he knows his abilities from his time as a McLaren driver in Formula 1.
On 6 December, Stoffel took part in the IndyCar test at Sebring. Vandoorne follows Nico Hülkenberg as test driver for Arrow McLaren SP and will also play a role in the team’s plans. He will then drive part-time alongside Patricio O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist before the team adds a third car in 2023. This is also possible as Hülkenberg has renounced a place in IndyCar.
Vandoorne completed no less than 138 laps during the tests. Stoffel was happy with his first encounter with an IndyCar car and ended the test day with a positive feeling. In preparation for the test day, Vandoorne had a long talk with Rosenqvist about how he could best prepare. The Arrow McLaren SP team boss was also extremely satisfied with Stoffel’s achievements during this test day. Now he has a small idea of what IndyCar is all about and this might help him decide what to do after his adventure with Mercedes in Formula E.
What will it be?
In the end there are many rumors and only time will tell where Stoffel’s future will lie. I think there are enough offers for him, but of course a lot can change in another year. Stoffel has already indicated that his focus is first and foremost on finishing well with Mercedes in Formula E where they took the constructors’ victory last season, and de Vries even became champion.
With a very strong last season in Formula E, maybe more opportunities will come his way. Time will tell a lot in the end.
