This weekend, the Formula 1 circus heads to Zandvoort for the highly anticipated Dutch Grand Prix 2024. Max Verstappen, getting back on track after some difficult races, will have all eyes on him. Will he be able conquer another win in front of the Orange Army?
Zandvoort: The Perfect Stage for a Dutch Triumph
This historic circuit is known for its challenging layout, featuring narrow straights that put even the best drivers to the test. Since its return to the F1 calendar, the track has become synonymous with excitement and drama. But for Max Verstappen, Zandvoort is more than just a racetrack—it’s a homecoming.
The “Orange Army”
Max Verstappen’s popularity in the Netherlands is unmatched. The grandstands at Zandvoort will be a sea of orange, as tens of thousands of fans go to the circuit to support their hero. The so called “Orange Army” brings an energy unlike any other fan base, creating an atmosphere that can only be described as electric.
Verstappen himself has often spoken about the unique boost he gets from racing in front of his home crowd. Still they’ve often gone over the top, creating uncomfortable or even dangerous environments in the paddock. Some drivers, for exemple Sir Lewis Hamilton, have complained about their lack of sportsmanship. In fact, in numerous occasions, they cheered whenever other drivers crashed or were forced to retire from a race. When asked about his opinion, Max condemned this behaviour and the excessive consumption of alcohol that occours in these events.
What to Expect on Race Day
As the race weekend unfolds, the atmosphere in Zandvoort will build to a crescendo. Verstappen’s every move will be followed closely, from practice sessions to qualifying, as fans eagerly anticipate what could be another historic victory. However, the last two weekends before the summer break have been particularily tough for the Dutch driver. The two McLarens proved to be challenging opponents in the fight for the title and Lewis Hamilton gaves us some incredible action on track as well! This combo managed to keep Verstappen off the podium, so the fans are waiting to see how will Max fight back.
While the challenge will be fierce on track, with other top teams eager to spoil the orange party, Verstappen’s bond with his home crowd might just give him the edge he needs.
So, as the lights go out at Zandvoort, one thing is certain: the “Orange Army” will be behind their hero every step of the way. There’s no place like home, and this weekend, all of the Netherlands will be hoping to see their champion standing tall on the top step of the podium.
